Menstrual Cycle
Oh no! Have you just started your periods? Take a deep breathe and think positive. It is recommended that you tell a trusted adult. Don't worry if you are embarrased, adults will understand, all females go through the mestrual cylce. Some key things you might want to know include :
- It happens approximately every 28 days, the days will vary depending on the person.
- It could last for as little as 2 days to as long as 7 days.
- It will take about 2 years before periods will come consistenly ( so don't worry if you miss one in the first 2 years0.
- You will loose 2-6 table spoons of blood during a period.
It is usually best if you keep a calendar and record your periods so you can predict when the next period will occur. However, it is reccommened that you carry a pad or tampon with you in your bag just in case! You also need to decide whether you want to use tampons or pads. There are ups and downs for each one. You should seek advice from an older sister, mother or aunt if you are unsure of the decision.

Pads
POSITIVES -You are aware that they are there so you will change them regularly -They are secure and comfy. -They are sanitary and easy to throw away. -They're eaiser to use when sleeping. NEGATIVES - You are consious of them all the time. -They can smell if not regularly changed. -You can't go swimming with them on. -The thick pads can sometimes be seen through pants or look bulky. -They can slip out of place |
Tampons
POSITIVES -You are unaware of it -They can not be seen ( besides the string) -They do not give an odour -They're not messy and easy to through away -Tampons are easy to pack and camoflage in bags not to mention they don't even take up much space.. NEGATIVES - It is easy to forget to change them -The leak sometimes. -It can be difficult to put them in place. -If they are not put in the right angle they could be uncomfortable. -Sometimes you need more than a tampon. - Research has shown they connect with Toxic Shock Syndrome. |
