Female Reproductive System
Vagina:
This is a hollow and muscular tube that connets to the uterus. It's muscular wall allows it to expand and contract. This enables it to stretch wide enough for a baby or small enough for a tampon. The vagina serves three purposes : The pathway for a baby to leave the body, in provides the route for blood to exit during a period and it is where the penis is inserted during sexual intercourse.
Uterus :
The uterus is the womb in which the fetus develops. It has a muscular, thick lining and is shaped like an upside down pear. The uterus is one of the strongest muscles in a fully grown woman's body (It helps to push the baby during in labor).
Fallopian Tubes :
The fallopian tubes are connected to the ovaries and the uterus. It is the path way that an egg takes to reach the uterus. If the egg is fertilized by a sperm cell whilst in the fallopian tube ( before it reaches the uterus ) then the female will fall pregnant.
Ovaries :
These are basically the main part of a female's reproductive organs. There are two ovaries, one on each side of the uterus, and they are approximately the size and shape of an almond. The ovaries produce the female hormones (oestrogens and progesterone) and eggs (ova). Only one egg is released every 28 days ( days vary for different females) either from the left or the right ovary, the selection is random.
Cervix :
The cervix is the entrance to the uterus. It is a ring of muscle and hold a baby in place when the female is pregnant.
